Methodology

At SEK International Schools, our proprietary Future Learning Model shapes every aspect of the IBDP online experience. Rooted in the development of both intelligence and values, it prepares students to thrive in a complex, ever-changing world.

The SEK Future Learning Model:

  • Promotes flexible, personalized, and collaborative learning.
  • Cultivates critical thinking, real-world problem solving, and an entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Empowers students to take ownership of their learning journey.

By integrating the International Baccalaureate teaching framework with SEK’s Future Learning Model, we’ve created a single, comprehensive methodology —one that blends global academic standards with a deep emphasis on student agency, skill development, and personal growth. IBDP online students benefit from the same inquiry-based, discussion-driven, and competency-focused learning that defines all SEK schools—fully adapted for the digital environment.

Curriculum

The IBDP online is structured around six subject groups: Studies in language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, and the arts. Students select a combination of subjects from these groups, with a balance between Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) courses. This structure ensures academic rigor while offering the flexibility to tailor learning to individual passions—providing outstanding preparation for any university pathway.

Within each subject area, students have the freedom to pursue the topics they are most passionate about—enhancing their strengths, developing 21st century skills, and preparing strategically for university. With this flexible, student-centered approach, each learner designs a personalized academic pathway that aligns with their goals and aspirations.

In addition to the six subject areas, all students complete three core components that are central to the IB philosophy: the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). These elements foster inquiry, reflection, and real-world engagement, contributing to the development of well-rounded, globally minded learners.

The study of language and literature studies offers a wide range of texts, and students come to appreciate the complexity, richness, and subtlety of a language in a variety of contexts. Students study in a language in which they are proficient.

  • Spanish A (SL and HL)
  • English A (SL and HL)

Language acquisition studies focus on the acquisition and use of language in different contexts and for different purposes, while promoting the understanding of another culture through the study of its language.

  • Spanish ab initio
  • Spanish B (SL and HL)
  • English B (SL and HL)

This area of study is designed to develop exceptional critical and analytical skills in students. Through the exploration of theories, concepts, and arguments, students learn to understand the complexity of societies and the impact of individual actions on the world.

  • Business management (SL and HL)
  • History (SL and HL)

The study of science allows students to explore the concepts, theories, models, and techniques that underpin each subject area and, in doing so, develop their understanding of the scientific method.

  • Biology (SL and HL)
  • Chemistry (SL and HL)
  • Physics (SL and HL)
  • Environmental systems and societies (SL and HL)
  • Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences (SL and HL)

The study of mathematics develops mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills, with courses tailored to different levels of ability and interest.

  • Mathematics: Analysis and approaches (SL and HL)
  • Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (SL)

The study of the arts is designed to foster critical, reflective, and informed practice, helping students to understand the dynamic and changing nature of the arts, explore the diversity of the arts across time, place, and cultures, and express themselves with confidence and competence.

  • Film (SL and HL)

The IBDP’s three core components are designed to foster critical thinking, independent inquiry, and holistic personal growth—essential traits of a well-rounded learner. All IBDP online students complete the following:

  • The Extended Essay (EE): An independent, self-directed research project culminating in a 4,000-word paper on a topic of academic interest.
  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK): A course that challenges students to reflect on the nature of knowledge and how we know what we claim to know.
  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): A framework for personal and interpersonal development through meaningful, student-led experiences beyond the classroom.

IBDP online allows students to complete the DP syllabus 100% online. As with the in-person program, the curriculum includes six groups of subjects from which students choose three subjects at SL and three at HL, as well as developing three core components: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS), and the Extended Essay (EE). This structure offers a rigorous and well-rounded education, delivered through a flexible online format that adapts to each student’s individual needs and circumstances.

CAS is a core element of the IB Diploma Programme, designed to encourage students’ personal growth through real-world experiences beyond the classroom. In the IBDP online, CAS remains a vital and dynamic component—adapted to fit each student’s context, wherever they are in the world. Students complete CAS activities independently with the guidance of a dedicated CAS supervisor and document their progress in a digital portfolio. Activities are carried out in the student’s local environment and supported virtually by SEK-Global Campus.

Examples include:

  • Creativity – Digital art, music production, creative writing, or multimedia projects
  • Activity – At-home fitness routines, online yoga, or personalized exercise goals
  • Service – Volunteering in the local community or leading initiatives with social impact

CAS in the IBDP online is designed to be flexible, meaningful, and aligned with the IB’s mission of developing well-rounded, reflective learners.
