The SEK-Atlántico student, Paula Juncal Freire, has published her first book, entitled El dolor, una belleza oculta (Pain, a hidden beauty), by Editorial Planeta. The manuscript, which began as a part of her school coursework, is a personal project that she wrote at 14 years and in which she describes, through several poems, what happiness is and how society influences it.
Paula, 16, has granted an interview to the newspaper Faro de Vigo in which she describes, among other things, her creative process that led her to write and, subsequently publish, a book that reflects her most intimate and personal side.
“I am not going to lie, it was a complicated time, it took me a long time to find a way to get everything I had inside, open myself up so that I could express my emotions and tug people’s heart strings, but not with my own story, but with their own. As I progressed, I went deeper into my pain and in my past, I suffered. It hurt to relive everything that had happened to me, but it was worth it. Not because I managed to publish it, but because I managed to get rid of a version of myself had a lot of baggage, a lot of insecurities and a lot of fears”, says the SEK-Atlántico student.
For Paula, having a publishing house as important as Planeta show interest in her work was a source of “pride, it makes me feel special and valued. […] I feel that something sincere, real and beautiful has been given value. That gives me a feeling of joy.”
The student also showed interest during the interview in repeating this experience in the future, although for the moment she prefers to focus on other aspects of her life. “At the moment, I do not intend to do something of this magnitude again, I want to give myself some time to discover what else is in me and focus on the people around me,” she acknowledges.
