The baccalaureate is a crucial educational stage for students aspiring to enter university or the workforce with a strong academic foundation. In Spain, there are several baccalaureate options, ranging from the conventional model to international programs that ease access to foreign universities.
In this article, we explain the main types of baccalaureate available in Spain, focusing on their features, advantages, and entry requirements.
LOMLOE Baccalaureate
The LOMLOE Baccalaureate follows Spain’s national curriculum under the Organic Law for the Modification of the LOE (LOMLOE), approved in 2020. It spans two years (1st and 2nd year of Baccalaureate) and is divided into four tracks:
- Science and Technology
- Humanities and Social Sciences
- Arts
- General
Each of these LOMLOE tracks includes core subjects, specialization subjects (depending on the track), and elective subjects chosen by the student. Each modality is designed to prepare students according to their interests and academic goals.
Assessment under LOMLOE is based on exams and assignments. At the end of the program, students must take the EvAU (University Entrance Examination) to access university.
Students with special educational needs, those pursuing professional music education, high-level athletes, or those with valid justification, may extend the Baccalaureate to three years instead of two.
Additionally, there are two extra formats: the Excellence Baccalaureate and Adult Baccalaureate.
Excellence Baccalaureate
The Excellence Baccalaureate is aimed at high-achieving students. Offered in some autonomous communities, this program aims to:
- Promote research and critical thinking
- Better prepare students for demanding university studies
- Provide personalized education with advanced methodologies
In some cases, it includes collaborations with universities or research centers for a richer academic experience.
Adult Baccalaureate
The Adult Baccalaureate is designed for individuals over 18 who wish to complete their secondary education. It can be pursued in various formats:
- In-person: at adult education centers
- Distance learning: via online platforms or distance learning institutes
- Independently: by taking official exams without attending classes
This option offers greater flexibility for those who work or have personal responsibilities.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is one of the most recognized types of baccalaureate in Spain. Aimed at students aged 16 to 19, it is internationally recognized and designed to provide a holistic education that fosters critical thinking, research, and intercultural understanding.
The IB does not offer different tracks; instead, all students follow a common core comprising three core components and six subjects, one from each of the six subject groups. Students choose subjects based on their future goals.
In addition to coursework, students must study Theory of Knowledge, participate in Creativity, Activity, Service (a 150-hour community engagement program), and complete an Extended Essay on a topic of their choice.
Upon completing the program, students can access universities around the world with a greater likelihood of admission compared to other applicants. To enter Spanish universities, they do not need to take the EvAU, as they can apply with their IB average score as international students.
This type of baccalaureate is not available in all Spanish schools. The IB program is only offered by institutions authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), including those within the SEK Education Group.
IBDP Online
In recent years, some schools have begun offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) entirely online.
Advantages of IBDP Online:
- Flexible scheduling—ideal for students with other academic or athletic commitments
- Access to an international network of students and teachers
- Use of advanced digital platforms for interactive learning
IB Online is an excellent option for those who want to earn an international diploma without attending a physical IB school.
Bachibac or Spanish-French Dual Baccalaureate
The Bachibac program offers a dual diploma, enabling students to earn both the Spanish Baccalaureate and the French Baccalauréat simultaneously.
Key features of the Bachibac:
- Intended for students with a good level of French
- Includes subjects taught in French, such as French History
- Graduates can access both Spanish and French universities without additional exams
This program is ideal for students seeking a bilingual education with academic opportunities in both Spain and France.
American Dual Diploma Program
The American Dual Baccalaureate is another option that allows students to earn:
- The Spanish Baccalaureate
- The U.S. High School Diploma
How does it work?
Students complete their Spanish baccalaureate while also taking additional online courses in English, taught by American teachers.
Advantages of the American Dual Baccalaureate:
- Greater immersion in English, as subjects are taught in the language
- Access to U.S. universities with a recognized diploma
- Development of digital skills and independent learning
This program is especially recommended for students who want to improve their English and open doors to academic opportunities abroad.
So, which type of baccalaureate should you choose?
Choosing the right type of baccalaureate depends on each student’s interests, academic goals, and preferences.
- If you prefer the Spanish curriculum, the LOMLOE Baccalaureate offers general, excellence, or adult formats.
- If you want an international education, consider the International Baccalaureate (IB)—now also available as IBDP Online—or the American Dual Baccalaureate.
- If you’re looking for a dual diploma, the Bachibac allows access to both Spanish and French universities.
Whatever option you choose, each type of baccalaureate offers unique advantages to help shape your academic and professional future.
