No More, a mobile app against gender-based violence developed by a group of six girls from the year 4 ESO at SEK International School Ciudalcampo will represent Spain at the European final that takes place from today until 19 July Belgrade (Serbia). Previously, the project had been proclaimed winner of the Award for the Best Project at the 12th National Competition of Junior Achievement mini companies. The startup has been developed within the framework of SEK Lab Junior, first incubator of entrepreneurial school-based projects in Spain.
More than 200 young entrepreneurs from 35 countries participate in the Company of the Year Competition, organised by JA-Europe. A total of 6,341 Spanish secondary, baccalaureate and vocational training students presented their projects to the national phase with over 1,100 entries to the 12th National Competition of mini-companies of the Junior Achievement Foundation.
The winning project, No More, sends alerts and geolocation to contacts in the agenda, previously selected by the user, and other people who are in the vicinity. The app is aimed at women between 14 and 35 years old.
The idea of this app arose as a result of a bad experience of one of the team’s students, who suffered an incident while walking her dog: she was followed by a group of young men. Given this situation, she thought it would be very useful to have an alarm on her mobile.
The students from SEK-Ciudalcampo have designed the app themselves. They raised money for the design by selling merchandising they had designed. The app is available on Google Play to test, and hopes to find funding to be developed for iOS. Several women’s associations have already contacted them to disseminate and use the app, such as malostratos.org.
Entrepreneurship from school onward
Since 2015 SEK Education Group has sponsored different EdTech entrepreneurial projects through SEK Lab with aim of leading innovative projects in the educational field at an international level and providing a working space for the entire SEK community – students of different educational stages, teachers, mentors, alumni or startups – generating coworking activity, collaboration and R&D.
The aim of the training programme is to foster and encourage entrepreneurship among students from an early age. SEK Lab Junior is an incubator of ideas and projects emerging from the classrooms of SEK International Schools with the vocation to instil values associated with social impact entrepreneurship. Students have been able to organize and access entrepreneurship clubs, competitions between schools, maker spaces that enhance their learning in new technologies and launch exhibitions.
SEK Lab Junior collects all the activities promoted from SEK schools related to entrepreneurship, the development of ideas and projects. In the SEK educational model, entrepreneurship is not a subject, but a way of life to discover opportunities and solve problems.
