Anna Kubacka and Marcos Fernández García, of the Higher Council of Scientific Research, visited SEK-Santa Isabel on March 8. There they chatted with year 3 Primary students on two questions, What is science? and What is Chemistry?
Science was defined as a way of understanding the world, proposing an explanation to each observable phenomenon through the so-called scientific method. This method considers the definition and observation of the phenomenon being studied, the construction of a working hypothesis, its experimental analysis and its validation or refutation.
Subsequently, students listed the Fundamental Sciences that describe human knowledge and within them the sciences of matter and energy, Physics and Chemistry. Students analysed what physical or chemical change entailed and how each of them affect matter. Lastly, they went on to mention that all matter is composed of chemical elements, ordered according to the Periodic Table (118 currently known elements), and examples of their presence in materials of everyday life were offered.
