At the Global Education Forum Madrid 2024, the anthropologist Ignacio Martínez Mendizábal offered a presentation on the profound meaning of being human in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). During his talk, Martínez Mendizábal invited us to reflect on our own essence in a world increasingly dominated by technology and recalled that the deepest and most significant human qualities are those that truly define us.
The anthropologist began his speech by expressing how he felt “overwhelmed” by artificial intelligence, “a unique moment in history, where humanity questions its own identity like never before.” This questioning has been driven, in part, by the possibility of the existence of extraterrestrial beings, which challenges our perception of uniqueness. In this context, the anthropologist explored the fundamental qualities that make us irreplaceable, emphasising that the human essence goes beyond mere competition with advanced beings.
Evolutionary learning: from Darwin to the human imagination
The talk included a review of Charles Darwin’s transformative journey and his groundbreaking work On the Origin of Species, which redrew our understanding of biology and our connection to nature. Martínez Mendizábal attributed much of human success to the ability to imagine, a unique trait that has allowed our ancestors to survive and evolve and highlighted “the human ability to project oneself into the future and plan actions based on imagined scenarios.”
The anthropologist highlighted the importance of the Sierra de Atapuerca site, known for its archaeological discoveries, such as that of a 12-year-old girl with cranial anomalies, who lived in the Sima de los Huesos, and how these discoveries challenge the norms of selection natural in human evolution. “Relationships with the dead continue through memory and love, demonstrating that the human bond transcends mortality.” Furthermore, he explored the historical encounter between Homo sapiens and Neanderthals, underlining the human fascination with aesthetics and beauty.
Beauty and art: intrinsic expressions of Humanity
The anthropologist discussed the human obsession with beauty and how it influences our daily decisions. He cited historical examples, such as Venus figurines from 40,000 years ago, to illustrate how aesthetic expression has been integral to human culture.
He also reflected on human evolution and technology, contrasting technological achievements with essential human qualities such as poetry and emotional connections. He highlighted that “although artificial intelligence can advance, there are aspects of the human experience, such as love and beauty, which are difficult to replicate technologically.” Along these lines, he stated that “artificial intelligence must serve human intelligence, aspiring to promote love, beauty and happiness, and not simply to replicate our emotional capacities.”
