Nieves Segovia, president of SEK Education Group, has reflected on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a way to achieve the best possible future and to improve society and make it more sustainable and inclusive.
“Educational institutions have taken on this challenge and we are working to instil in our students the commitment to improve and lead society,” said Segovia.
To this end, she proposed ten decisive actions to move towards a more sustainable world, taking into account a key element, learning.
The first measure is awareness “accepting our role as agents of change and our own responsibility is to understand reality and its possibilities, but also the urgency of the threats that are being faced.”
Listening, in the words of Nieves Segovia, will allow, especially the youngest, “to introduce new references that enrich the vision with which we usually approach the millennium goals”.
Observing our surroundings, and farther afield, will help us “think globally and act locally, which remains a maxim that we must apply”.
Learning is essential, as advised by the president of SEK Group. “We must accept that learning happens over the course of people’s entire lives and that this mentality is the only way to build a possible future for all,” she stressed.
Education it is a priority, since “learning is not enough. In the new learning society, we are all teachers and we are all students”.
We must connect, since “to create the conditions for sustainable change it is necessary to weave collaboration networks”.
We must also share our experiences, since “each one of us is the best load speaker for the need for change”.
Taking action will ensure that we “contribute to a higher goal and exemplify the possibility of change”.
We must also remember to take care of ourselves, since “only if we take care of our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing can we contribute to the health and happiness of the world”.
And, last but not least, Nieves Segovia advised us to smile. “Maintaining hope and a positive spirit are essential to continue working enthusiastically for a better future,” she said.
