The President of the SEK Educational Institution, Nieves Segovia, took part in the roundtable discussion “The New Education Focused on Resilient Economies”, held within the framework of the IV SDG Observatory 2025, organized by EL ESPAÑOL, ENCLAVE ODS and Invertia at CaixaForum Madrid.
In a session moderated by journalist and director of ENCLAVE ODS, Charo Izquierdo, Nieves shared the stage with Gustavo Suárez-Pertierra, President of UNICEF, and Alberto García-Peñas, Director of the Master’s in Circular Engineering at Universidad Carlos III.
During her intervention, the President emphasized the urgency of a profound reform of the educational system: “The education sector is at the base of any other discussion. There is no doubt that the system must be reformed, for resilient economies and many other challenges. We are preparing our students for an uncertain future, and the education system is still based on teaching about certainties.”
She also warned about the loss of students’ sense of belonging to the school and defended the role of institutions as agents of social change: “We want to lead that change, but we must carry out a very deep internal reflection. There are as many opportunities as there are challenges,” she stated.
Segovia also highlighted the importance of opening schools to the community and bringing the community into schools, stressing the need to work in networks and to count on allies:
“The solution is systemic. The institution must play a network role, be an open space with real practices. Alone, within the system, it will not happen.”
Regarding training in skills related to sustainability and the circular economy, Segovia stressed that the challenge remains to raise awareness across the entire educational community —students, teachers, and families— so that institutions become living models of the values they seek to instill.
With these reflections, Nieves Segovia reaffirmed the commitment of the SEK Educational Institution to a transformative education, one capable of responding to global challenges and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
