Luka Doncic, former SEK student, signs with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most historic and decorated franchises in the NBA, with 17 championships to their name, have announced the signing of Luka Doncic, a former student of SEK International School El Castillo, from the Dallas Mavericks.

The Slovenian player, who played for Real Madrid before moving to the United States, will now share the locker room with LeBron James, one of the greatest legends and the all-time leading scorer in the history of the league.

As a member of Real Madrid’s youth academy, the club that brought him to Spain at just 13 years old, Doncic completed his schooling at SEK International Schools, specifically at SEK-El Castillo, starting in 2012.

A 25-Year Relationship

Since the year 2000, more than 300 players from Real Madrid’s youth academy, both from the football and basketball divisions, have studied at SEK-El Castillo and SEK-Ciudalcampo, ranging from sixth grade to the final year of high school.

Among them, several currently play for Real Madrid’s first team, such as Lucas Vázquez, along with many others over the past two decades. Other former Real Madrid academy players who studied at SEK International Schools have gone on to play in the NBA, like Luka Doncic, or have done so in recent years, such as Usman Garuba.

A Century-Long Legacy in Sports

SEK Education Group has a century-long history closely linked to sports. In 1987, it received the Joaquín Blume National Sports Award, and in 2010, Camilo José Cela University was also honored. Additionally, it has been awarded the Spanish Olympic Committee Prize.

Since 2015, it has offered the SEK International Sports Academy, the only program of its kind in Spain, which allows high-performance student-athletes from schools and universities to balance their academic studies with their sports careers in a personalized way. The program fosters comprehensive development in sports, academics, and personal growth.

The Marqués de Samaranch Olympic Chair at Camilo José Cela University, founded by the Honorary President of the International Olympic Committee, aims to promote, develop, and spread the Olympic movement.
