The students of SEK-Les Alpes began their first week of the school year by immersing themselves in the natural environment surrounding the school and laying the foundations for the final project they will develop during their stay. The first field outings included hiking routes to Col de Aravis, Lake Flumet and Les Saisies—trails that allowed them to observe the Alpine landscape both through personal experience and through the use of drones, a tool that will be essential for their research on this area of the Alps.
These excursions helped introduce the central theme of the academic experience and provided an initial assessment of the group’s skill levels. At the same time, the students began literary work focused on myths and legends, with particular attention to the figure of Gargantua, the giant who, according to tradition, shaped the French landscape.
The academic program also included an initial introduction to the fundamentals of cartography. On Friday, students incorporated the mathematical concepts necessary for creating and interpreting maps—content that will continue to be expanded in the coming weeks to ensure thorough preparation for the final project. That same day, French classes also began as part of the program’s complementary activities.
Leisure activities completed an especially intense week. Students attended an ice hockey match in Megève and enjoyed an adventure day in the mountains, featuring challenges and zip lines, organized by Escaladventure. On Sunday, they hiked to Les Aveniers, where they were required to photo-document the area for one of the challenges scheduled for the following week. The week concluded with an ice-skating session at the Olympic Ice Rink in Albertville.
