Camilo José Cela University has become the first Spanish university to be awarded the Platinum level of the international FISU Healthy Campus certification—the highest distinction granted by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). This accreditation recognises the comprehensive commitment of higher education institutions to promoting health, well-being and sustainability on their campuses.
The FISU Healthy Campus certification, which is renewed every four years, evaluates compliance with 100 criteria related to encouraging healthy and sustainable lifestyles. These criteria are organised into seven key areas: management and continuous improvement, physical activity and sport, nutrition, disease prevention, mental and social health, risk behaviours, and environment, sustainability and social responsibility.
After previously achieving the Bronze level, UCJC has now met more than 91 criteria required to obtain the Platinum level. As a result, it stands out not only as a national benchmark, but also as one of the few universities worldwide to receive this distinction.
The FISU Healthy Campus programme currently includes over 140 certified universities across more than 40 countries. However, only around ten of them have reached the Platinum level.
Spain’s most sustainable urban campus
This accreditation reinforces UCJC’s strategic focus on the well-being of its educational community, which is reflected in programmes and services aimed at promoting physical, emotional, mental and social health.
This achievement adds to other milestones that demonstrate UCJC’s firm commitment to developing healthy spaces. UCJC’s Castellana Campus, considered the most sustainable urban campus in Spain, holds the international LEED Platinum and WELL Platinum certifications, recognising it as a building that meets the strictest standards in environmental health and sustainability. These certifications assess factors such as energy efficiency, use of sustainable materials, indoor environmental quality, and the positive impact on the health of its occupants.
With these recognitions, UCJC consolidates a model of a sustainable, healthy campus focused on community well-being, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Camilo José Cela University is also part of SEK Education Group, which holds the international B Corp certification—a distinction awarded to organisations that meet the highest standards of social, environmental, and governance impact.
