The Schooner Cervantes Saavedra to participate in the VIII edition of Escala a Castelló

From April 25 to 28, the port of Castellón will host the eighth edition of Escala a Castelló, an international event that has attracted nearly half a million visitors in previous years. Among the notable vessels participating this year is the Cervantes Saavedra Schooner, the training ship of Universidad Camilo José Cela.

With a length of 48.5 meters and a beam of 7.8 meters, the Cervantes Saavedra joins other historic vessels in this maritime festival, reinforcing its role in promoting traditional sailing and maritime culture.

This historic schooner was built in 1934 as a lightship at the Swedish shipyard Götaverken AB under the name Sydostbrotten 33. It was acquired by UCJC in 2005 and renamed Cervantes Saavedra.

This year’s major highlight is the arrival, for the first time in Castellón, of the Nao Santa María, a replica of the ship Christopher Columbus sailed to America in 1492. Visitors will also have the chance to discover the Don du Vent, a vessel originally built for warfare, later converted into a fishing boat, and now a recreational sailing ship.

Escala a Castelló was created with the goal of reviving maritime traditions and establishing itself as one of the most prominent maritime festivals in the Mediterranean. Since its first edition in 2018, the event has grown significantly, becoming a must-visit for naval history and maritime culture enthusiasts.
