Javier Eladio Guzmán, teacher at SEK International School Alborán, has been nominated for this year’s edition of the Educa Abanca Awards as Best Teacher in Spain 2018. He was presented as a candidate by his current and former students. These awards, held for the second time in Spain, seek to publicly recognise good teaching practices and award the best teachers chosen according to a series of variables published on the Educa platform, made up by teachers of different educational stages that promotes the improvement of education.
Appearing in this select listing of teachers is an accomplishment in and of itself and recognises his daily work as a teacher.
The list of the ten nominees for Early Childhood-Primary/Secondary School and Baccalaureate/University was published on 5 December 2018 and, in February 2019, the awards for Best Teacher in Spain will be presented at the 2nd World Education Congress in Santiago de Compostela.
Mr Guzmán’s is known for his passion for teaching how to think in public, a mission hinging on three elements: (1) competitive debating as an education tool (in Education for Citizenship, Philosophy and Theory of Knowledge); (2) technology as a means, not as an end (for example, through philosophical tweets – see #filosekalboran, or by setting challenge-based exams that require online research as well as reading of books); (3) brining students out of their comfort zone (like his History students, who become communicators of historical phenomena, having to transmit their cause, its development and consequences and what it meant at the time, something difficult to find on the Internet).
You can follow his teaching activity on the Club de Debate SEK-Alborán Facebook page and on the YouTube channel of the same name, as well as on his own YouTube channel: Professor Guzmán.
In 2018 Guzmán took part in three International Congresses on Linguistics, Education, and Digital Humanities and also published two scientific articles in the books entitled Análisis del discurso mediático and Innovación en la práctica educativa.
Guzmán holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Barcelona (2002) and is currently studying a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Córdoba
The SEK-Alborán teacher already feels very lucky and satisfied by the fact that some of his students or alumni have nominated him.
