International Baccalaureate and university entrance exams in Spain: Is the EvAU required?

IB diploma programme

The Selectivity Exams, also known as EvAU (Evaluation for University Access) or EBAU (High School Evaluation for University Access), are necessary for students in Spain to gain admission to university.

What is the EVAU exam in Spain?

The EVAU exam in Spain (also known as EBAU in some regions) stands for “Evaluación del Bachillerato para el Acceso a la Universidad” which means “Evaluation of the Baccalaureate for University Access”.

It is the official university entrance exam that Spanish students take at the end of Bachillerato (the last two years of secondary education, typically ages 16–18).

Do IB students have to take the selectivity exam (EvAU)?

Students who obtain the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma are not required to take the EvAU (Evaluación para el Acceso a la Universidad, also called Selectividad) in order to access universities in Spain. The final IB score is converted to the Spanish grading scale using an equivalency chart, and this converted score is used for university admission.

However, if students wish to improve their scores for highly competitive programs, such as medicine, engineering, or certain double degrees, it may be necessary to raise their admission score. In these cases, they have the option to register for the specific phase of the EvAU or take the Specific Competency Tests (PCE) administered by UNED. These additional assessments can award up to 4 extra points, which are added to the converted IB grade, potentially making the difference between meeting or missing the cut-off score for their desired program.

This flexible system allows IB students to benefit from their international qualification while also providing opportunities to enhance their admission profile within the Spanish university system.

How do IB students access university in Spain?

To access university in Spain through the International Baccalaureate (IB), students must pass the final examination with a minimum of 24 points. The conversion of International Baccalaureate (IB) grades for admission to Spanish universities is carried out through a specific process. Students must obtain accreditation from UNEDasiss, which converts IB scores to the Spanish 0–10 scale using an established formula. This accreditation is required for admission to public universities in Spain (EvAU). Although not mandatory, students may opt to take the Specific Competency Tests (PCE) to raise their admission score by up to 4 additional points.

Universities that recognize the IB

Around the world, the International Baccalaureate (IB) is widely recognized by universities for its academic rigor, global perspective, and holistic approach to education. Most higher education institutions accept the IB Diploma as a valid qualification for undergraduate admission, often valuing its emphasis on independent research, critical thinking, and multilingualism.

However, recognition policies can vary from one institution to another, especially when it comes to IB Online or specific subject combinations. Some universities may grant advanced standing, course credits, or subject exemptions, while others may have more general admission requirements.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information, students are advised to consult the admissions office of the university they are interested in or refer to the International Baccalaureate Organization’s official database of university recognition policies.
