Many languages are spoken at SEK classrooms, school corridors and environments. Internationality is a fundamental aspect at SEK Schools, where a melting pot of origins and cultures coexists, with more than 80 nationalities. Students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a multicultural and multilingual environment that promotes the learning of different languages and fosters tolerance and respect towards different cultures.
This global environment exposes students to interact with teachers, peers and situations that, without realising, allows them to acquire empathy, adaptability, respect and understanding in the face of diversity and different ways of interpreting the realities of the world.
International academic programmes are also an essential part of SEK students’ education.
International network of schools
In an increasingly interconnected and global world, stays in foreign countries enrich students even more.
From primary school, opportunities are promoted that invite cultural immersions of different durations – from weeks to full academic years – in safe and familiar environments at SEK-Dublin, in Ireland, and also at SEK-Les Alpes, in France.
Their boarding residences on the school campus and carefully vatted host families offer the opportunity to delve into Irish and French culture, which accelerates the learning of English and French and significantly improves verbal fluency. They also delve into the cultural richness of these countries, a unique experience they will remember all their lives.
Exchange programmes and international stays
Additionally, every year, SEK students undertake international stays of different durations, which contribute to their personal and academic growth.
This year, students from our schools have been able to travel to multiple countries with a wide variety of objectives in international stays:
- Academic, cultural and linguistic exchanges with other schools for the personal and academic development of the participants: exchanges with India, Slovakia, Romania, Australia, United States, France, Germany, Norway, England, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland
- Social impact and volunteering: collaborative projects with Ukraine, trips to India, South Africa, among others.
- Participation in United Nations models: BERMUN (Berlin) MUNISH (The Hague); OBSMUN (Oporto),
- Scientific stays: NASA Stage (Houston Space Center, USA), International Programming Day
- Artistic coexistence to understand the importance of different arts in different countries: ISTA (International School Theatre Association)
- Accompaniment to students learning Spanish: Spanish Language Lab projects between Colombia, Peru and Spain.
- Internships promoted by international institutions: Jóvenes Translatores (European Commission)
For Yago Vega, a year 3 student of the Middle Years Programme at SEK-El Castillo, “my experience in California has allowed me to develop my independence and to know how to adapt to different situations than those I encounter in my day-to-day life”. In addition, Yago remembers the positive impact that his stay has had on his life. “I realised how cultural differences imply different ways of acting. Something that despite being told, when you live it, you understand it better.”
SEK International Schools encourage their students to go on these international stays with the aim of enhancing their academic and personal growth and accompanies them with the support of the SEK coordinators and teachers to ensure their well-being.
