SEK-Catalunya’s ‘Of Course’ project wins the 4th National Final of the SEK Lab Junior Awards

The 4th National Final of the SEK Lab Junior Awards, which this year had to take place online, saw the participation of eight teams from SEK Schools. The best entrepreneurship projects from throughout the school year were presented in this competition, within the framework of the SEK Lab Junior training scheme.

The winning project was entitled Of Course and was entered by a year 4 secondary student at SEK-Catalunya, consisting of making half-moon reading glasses with a koala rod system. The project is aimed at people who cannot afford to buy progressive glasses.

These students were awarded with the creation of a website, a crowdfunding campaign to finance the project, a marketing and communications campaign to give them media coverage and a mentor to help them and guide them during the development of their application.

The second finalist, by year 5 and 6 Primary students from SEK-Alborán, presented the project Healthy Makers, a special mask for blind and deaf people, as well as for Early Childhood teachers, since young children need eye contact. With this mask, you can see the face well, so that people with communication difficulties can benefit from this essential accessory at this time.

Finally, the third finalist was Rurally, created by year 4 Secondary students from SEK-Ciudalcampo, a digital platform that connects municipalities, companies and workers, so that the medium-sized municipalities and towns that are depopulating can compete to attract talent and, in this way, reverse their situation. This project was the winner of the 14th Junior Achievement National Mini Company Competition.

SEK Lab Junior

first incubator of school-based entrepreneurial projects in Spain – encompassing Primary, Secondary and Baccalaureate. Since 2015, SEK Education Group has sponsored different EdTech entrepreneurial projects through SEK Lab with aim of leading innovative projects in the educational field at an international level and providing a working space for the entire SEK community – students of different educational stages, teachers, mentors, alumni or startups – generating coworking activity, collaboration and R&D.

This training scheme aims to foster and boost the entrepreneurial spirit in students from an early age, and it develops throughout the school year as an incubator for ideas and projects that arise in the classrooms of SEK Schools. SEK Lab Junior’s vocation is to instil values associated with social impact entrepreneurship. Students are able to organise and access entrepreneurship clubs, competitions between schools, maker spaces that enhance their learning in new technologies and launch exhibitions.
