The first year of a new era

The lives of people, and the history of institutions, are remembered through their milestones. Thus, a year ago we marked the 50th anniversary of the SEK Ethos, and this academic year we are celebrating the first 20 years of our University, UCJC.

However, if anything is going to define the 2019-20 school year it is the birth of a new era that has long been heralded. The new future that was dawning, more or less timidly, with changes in the world of work, the economy, education or health, has taken us by surprise to lay to waste to the set of certainties on which we built our existence. It is now clear and inevitable that the future will bring exponential changes and uncertainty.

The trigger for this new era has been one of the worst pandemics in human history. But a change of era represents much more, it is the source of the greatest challenges and the greatest opportunities.

Over the last few months, we have seen the curve of contagion and death ebb and flow, while our own personal and collective learning curve has grown sharply. Many activities, attitudes, and behaviours have changed forever, and so has learning.

It is no longer possible to return to the same classrooms that we abruptly left behind, but not just for health reasons. The fabulous laboratory of learning experiences that we have shared on a global scale requires us to reformulate, not only our own teaching practices, but the overall purpose of education itself.

A new era demands a new education that SEK Group –SEK Schools and University Camilo José Cela– aspires to spearhead. Hence, we have deployed a rich digital learning ecosystem that is only the beginning of a deeper redefinition of the SEK 2021 Educational Model. A model which we have been working on for years, and which will be, among other things, more personal, flexible, blended and social.

A new education that will be, as was the case in 1892, at the service of the incipient values that are shaping a new social context. For this reason, it is a pleasure to announce that the SEK Group has become the first B Corp educational institution in Spain. A recognition that we will take to the classrooms, so that our students become the architects of this new era, an era that is more sustainable, more collaborative, more supportive and more global.

Welcome to the fi rst year of an era that will test us and require us to give our best, but that, with everyone’s work, will be better.
