SEK International School Catalunya was officially opened on 9 September 1995, focusing its educational model on the student as the axis of its methodology and establishing their learning needs as a priority, a challenge that it has overcome leading to great academic results from its students.
The opening day was attended by the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Juan Antonio Samaranch. Attending on behalf of the Generalitat de Catalunya was the Regional Minister for Education, Joan M. Pujals; the Secretary General for Sports, Josep Lluis Vilaseca and on behalf of the municipality of La Garriga, its mayor, Alfred Vila. Felipe Segovia, founder of SEK Education Group, revealed a commemorative plaque at the school’s opening ceremony with the first school Principal, Juan Sabaté.
Felipe Segovia gave an emotional address about SEK-Catalunya that same day: “I did not come here to build a school. I have come to found a school. A school, in its epistemological sense, for the Greeks, is a place of leisure, thought, creative and shared reflection. And this is my goal. Make this place a centre of education, a place of values and human improvement, a coming together of joint effort and enterprise”.
“To those who have opted for SEK-Catalunya, parents, teachers, please accept all my gratitude. And now, forward. The future is not written. Its pages are blank. Let us live every day to its full and write down our dreams to make them come true with joint effort, prayer, with the hope of being better and making better those who expect everything from us”, concluded the founder of SEK Group.
During its quarter of a century of existence, SEK-Catalunya has used the Intelligent Classroom methodology to educate its students, ensuring meaningful and global learning to face the challenges of the 21st century. This philosophy develops the intelligence and values of each student according to their potential, in an environment of freedom and autonomy, with the teacher as a mentor and facilitator their learning path, attaching great importance to teamwork and adaptation to the environment.
An educational model bolstered by the International Baccalaureate programmes
SEK-Catalunya has strengthened the differential traits of its educational model, offering three International Baccalaureate Organisation (IB) programmes for students between the ages of 3 and 18. Among its historical achievements, the school obtained accreditation from the International Baccalaureate to teach the Middle Years Programme (MYP) in 1997; the Diploma Programme (DP) in 2005; and the Primary Years Programme (PYP) in 2010.
SEK-Catalunya has also enjoyed many years of success in the Spanish Bachillerato exams, with its students achieving 100% pass rates in the university entrance exam (EvAU) over the last thirteen years consecutively. The school’s international scope has recently been expanded, thanks to its 2015 authorisation to offer the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award scheme, its CIS membership and its recent NEASC accreditation.
Also, the construction of the new international boarding house in 2018. Sport is another of the areas that SEK-Catalunya has excelled in over recent years, with the inauguration of the padel tennis courts in 2018 and the artificial turf football pitch in 2019.
“I am convinced that SEK-Catalunya will adapt to the changes in education in the future, with the challenge of achieving personalised learning, and will inspire each student over the next 25 years to find and pursue their passions and interests, such as our founder, Felipe Segovia, would have wished”, says Roberto Prata, Principal at SEK-Catalunya.
