Camilo José Cela University (UCJC) has obtained the prestigious LEED Platinum and WELL Platinum certifications for the KOI building of the new Castellana Campus in Madrid, becoming the most sustainable urban campus and university in Spain, along with the B Corp certification. These certifications are the result of a comprehensive renovation led by Royal Metropolitan and the collaboration and effort of the CBRE Sustainability team, supported by UCJC’s commitment.
The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification is an international system for evaluating and certifying sustainable buildings developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. The Platinum level is the highest and is only awarded to buildings that meet strict criteria for energy efficiency, use of sustainable materials, and indoor environmental quality.
Furthermore, the WELL certification is a standard focused on the health and well-being of people in buildings and the community it affects. This evaluation system considers factors such as the presence of art in the space, native landscaping, natural and well-designed lighting, air quality, acoustic and thermal comfort, and physical and mental health, among others. The Platinum level is also the highest, recognising buildings that offer the best conditions for the health and well-being of their occupants.
UCJC Rector Héctor Escamilla expressed his satisfaction with this achievement. “We are tremendously proud that our campus has received these recognitions because they underline our commitment to sustainability and well-being, fundamental pillars of our university. It is an honour to lead an institution that is committed to a healthier and more sustainable future for our students, teachers, and communities.”
The UCJC Castellana Campus, located at Juan Hurtado de Mendoza 4, is an innovative space, designed by Royal Metropolitan and Ortiz León Arquitectos, which spans four floors and spans an area of 11,319 m2, of which 3,226 m2 are dedicated to green areas and outdoor workspaces for healthy and collaborative learning. This campus offers nine bachelor’s degrees and five joint degrees, as well as twelve master’s degrees, including Criminology and Security, Law, Computer Engineering, and International Relations.
With these certifications, UCJC not only reinforces its commitment to the environment but also promotes an educational environment that prioritises the holistic well-being of its students and staff.
