The Family Classroom webinar series by SEK International Schools recently hosted a session focused on the relationship between neuroscience and childhood, featuring Dr. Cecilia Inés Theirs Rodríguez, director of the Master’s in Cognitive Neuroscience at Camilo José Cela University. The discussion covered key aspects of brain development in early childhood and its impact on learning and education.
Dr. Theirs Rodríguez began by highlighting the importance of neural plasticity in childhood. “The child’s brain is constantly changing, and neural plasticity in the early years is crucial for the development of cognitive and emotional skills,” she explained. She emphasized the significance of stimulating environments and early experiences in shaping the brain.
Another central topic was the importance of secure attachment in early childhood. “Children who grow up in an emotionally secure environment are better equipped to face challenges and regulate their emotions,” the expert stated. She also stressed the need to promote parenting strategies that are informed by an understanding of brain development.
The role of education in child development was also a key focus. Dr. Theirs Rodríguez noted that “active methodologies and personalized learning better address each child’s individual needs, allowing them to reach their full potential.” She also underscored the importance of play in learning, explaining that “play is not just entertainment; it is a fundamental tool for consolidating knowledge and social skills.”
To conclude the session, participating families had the opportunity to ask questions and share experiences on how to apply these insights in educational and family settings. The session ended with an invitation to continue exploring how neuroscience can enhance education and childhood well-being.
